Stephan Hauser

Job title
Postdoctoral Researcher

University of Helsinki, Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science – Yliopistonkatu 3, 00100 Helsinki.

Stephan Hauser completed a PhD in Architecture and Urban Planning in 2022 at TU Delft’s Faculty of Architecture in the Netherlands. As an environmental historian coming from a legal background, his transdisciplinary research focuses on the impact of oil companies on the development of port cities and the creation and application of regulations linked to spatial planning, and the protection of health and the environment. Many of his publications took the port cities of Dunkirk in France and Rotterdam in the Netherlands as two extreme examples of the oil industry’s influences on cities, people, and natural environments. This topic relates to his current position as a post-doctoral researcher in the project ‘forging sustainability science for societal change’ funded by HELSUS, where questions around the notions of sustainability, transitions, and justice are of particular importance. The public health focus of this research and its transferability has also been granted research funding by the Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation for 2024/2026.
