Maurice Harteveld has an uninterrupted focus on public space. His theoretical concept of ‘interior public space’ (since 2004, 2007) has brought different design disciplines together as well as pushed the boundaries of urban design. His developing thoughts on ‘domesticated public space’ (since 2014, 2019) also has a similar effect in the overlap with cultural anthropology, urban sociology, and environmental psychology. This guided him to developing transdisciplinary methods. His engagement in port-cities and understanding maritime mindsets came soon after.
Maurice particularly investigated port-cities as places where hyperdiversity though the global and territorial flows of people becomes manifest. By advancing mnemonic techniques like the mental mapping and micro biographic writing on public spaces, he is at the forefront of developing spatially-based analyses that explicitly consider collective cognitive values among different social groups. This informs the design of public space in more accurate ways and diversifies design strategies.
