Gong Zhang is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Architecture at TU Delft. Since October 2022, he has been involved in his doctoral research on “Operationalize Port City Heritage for Human Well-being in Line with UNESCO's Historic Urban Landscape Approach”. Gong’s research focuses on re-understanding the relationship between urban heritage and human well-being. He aims to develop operational and integrated methodologies using digital technologies like VR and GIS, while also conducting empirical studies in various port cities worldwide like Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Shanghai.
Before pursuing his PhD, Gong received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Architecture from Tongji University. His academic journey included exchanging at IUAV in Italy and participating in collaborative designs and competitions in Germany and Korea. Gong also gained practical experience as an intern architect at Rurban Studio, TJAD. Simultaneously, he served as a research assistant at Tongji University's Computational Urban Design Lab, focusing on quantitative urban morphology and embodied evidence-based research.
