Carola Hein has published widely in the field of architectural, urban and planning history, tying historical analysis to contemporary development. Among other major grants, she received a Guggenheim and an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship. She has (co)led several European projects and work packages, including the COST Action Port City Territories in Action and a work package in Bauhaus of the Sea Sails. She works on diverse flows in port cities and territories, focusing on the importance of long-term development and path dependencies. Her research combines archival research, GIS-based analysis and research by design activities in education. Recently she has focused on water and heritage, spearheading the peer reviewed open access journal Blue Papers and other capacity building tools.
