The Representation of the Daqing Oilfield: Crafting Space as a Medium for Political Propaganda

The presentation explores the process by which, from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s, the Central Government of China institutionalized the spatial representations of the Daqing Oilfield as a political tool to serve the consolidation of Mao Zedong and his successors' authority. Photography and painting were the primary forms of these spatial representations. This exploration will be divided into several sections: the actual living conditions and life circumstances of the locals, the institutionalization process, and the forms of spatial representation. The selective depiction of reality in these works emphasizes the successes of collectivism and industrialization, often neglecting to acknowledge the inherent contradictions and difficulties of that era. Thus, these spatial representations primarily served as evidence of the government's political agenda, rather than providing a critical portrayal of historical truth.
