China’s economic powerhouse Shanghai promises in its latest master plan to be exemplary in sustainable urban planning and design solutions, and to guide urban growth into a sustainable direction. In my research I raise the question how inclusive, safe, resilient sustainable transitions within (delta) waterfront redevelopments can be proactively supported by China’s central-controlled urban planning and design policies and practices, with the case of Shanghai as institutional frontrunner? By elaborating on experiences from China this research combines insights from the (international) Sustainability Transitions discourse with insights from Chinese Ecological Civilization thinking, aimed to realize sustainable urban planning and design alternatives.
