PROJECT 1 TU DELFT Dunkerque Beyond Oil: Post-Industrial Safari

Ege Cakir

This project aims to use the idea of spectacle to remediate land, generating public interest in an otherwise unspectacular, prosaic process through the creation of large autonomous ‘animals’ which roam through a site. The project focuses on Total Refinery Site, as it has the highest level of petroleum pollution in the soil. The site is also stretched along the canal which could create a gradient of the remediation progress from contaminated soil towards remediated soil . By this , visitors will have a broader understanding of the pyhtoremediation processes. The scheme has 4 phases that each lasts 10 years . These phases depict the remediated land, park in late stage, park in early stage and the contaminated l and. While autonomous beasts are cleaning the land, citizens of Dunkirk will have a recreational park that is constantly transforming and moving through Industrial Land. In this time, Dunkirk will become famous as a site of post- industrial safari, managed wilderness, spawning research and tourism through.
